Okay so the new trailer. I think I’m speaking for everyone when I say, holy fuCKING SHI-

As much as I loved the cinematography, the actors, and literally every other scene than what I’m about to bring up, I have two major issues that I have to address immediately.

1) The romanticized way they’re portraying Theo’s and Pippa’s relationship. Now this was to be expected, but I still have to call them out for it. Theo doesn’t know Pippa, pretty much at all, his “love” for her, is purely obsession. Even he himself admits this. His obsession on her is disturbing&unhealthy and should never be turned into a tragic romance about unrequited love. It’s just as bad as romanticizing Theo’s and Boris’ drug addiction.

I think it’s very offensive to interpret (and especially portray on film) Tartt’s writing as something that normalizes obsession on women. Theo literally sniffs her clothing without her consent and fucking picks up her hair and keeps it?? Do you really think, that this Pulitzer Prize winning author intended for people men to interpret their relationship this way?

This is another case where we see perfectly how Hollywood (which is literally run by white cishet men btw) treats stories like this. How Hollywood treats women. Pippa was aware that a more intimate relationship with Theo would have been unhealthy. To portray her any other way, is problematic to say the least. She wasn’t interested in him, and rejected him multiple times, and was uncomfortable because of him (i.e. Theo forcing himself on her, kissing her without consent, is harassment and there’s no sugarcoating it).

2) The painfully blatant queerbaiting. This was also to be expected, but that doesn’t make it any less awful or immoral. They used a bunch of scenes between Theo and Pippa, that were meant to be viewed as romantic, but then inserted the goodbye kiss in anyway.

Crowley expressed his interpretation in his first interview, before the first trailer. He said it’s reductive to call Theo’s and Boris’ feelings homosexual, and made it very clear he won’t be portraying Theo’s and Boris’ relationship as romantic (he’s erasing a part of the source material, the queerness of these characters. This is called queer erasure), and yet they use the QUEER KISS BETWEEN THESE BOYS in the PROMO MATERIAL (the trailer). What exactly is that supposed to convey to the audience?

This is queerbaiting 101. You deny the possibility of queer identity in your characters, but then use a queer kiss in your advertisement material (I mean at least try to be more subtle about it??? Like come the fuck on who do you think you’re fooling here??).

Crowley isn’t the only problem here. Not even close. It’s the whole production, that’s encouraging and letting this happen.
