Seeing people “cancel” lines from Ancient Greek tragedies is wild to me because… they’re. They’re thousands of years old. You can’t hold ancient mythology to the moral standards of real people today, or even modern fiction. At some point you have to accept that the world the writers inhabited is alien to you. History is full of bad shit and the further back you go, the weirder the cultural values and characterizations and ways of framing relationships and calculating consanguinity seem. You can’t engage with any ancient history or mythology, from anywhere, without stumbling into an endless amount of things that would be problematic, illegal, or otherwise unethical in a modern situation with real people.

Anyway I hardly think that modern human beings writing sympathetic reinterpretations of Medusa or Persephone and Hades or quoting Orestes is a moral failing that we need to help each other avoid. History is bad, it’s all bad, and modernity is about choosing how to engage with it in ways that suit contemporary sensibilities.
